Letters for the Future
The series “Letters for the Future” draws inspiration from the letters written on birch bark in Siberia. Through these works, I try to understand, feel, and reshape the trajectory of my own memory space. Am I immersed in a victim’s mindset, or can I draw from the experiences of those in the past a source of strength and defiant will to live? What should be released and left behind in the past, and what symbols might aid in processing and healing memory?
The series includes works made using birch bark and texts collected from participants of my survey, as well as paintings in which the motif of the letter becomes a unifying form — visualized through symbols and myths reflecting contemporary perceptions of cultural trauma.
It raises questions such as: What lessons and teachings still live on within families? And how diverse can inherited memories be — for while some lost their entire families in Siberia, others met the love of their lives there.
